Why Devices Inside an RV Struggle to Connect
One of the earliest lessons we learned is that WiFi devices located inside a camper often struggle to maintain a strong connection to an outdoor Access Point (AP). RV walls, insulation, metal framing, tinted windows, and even interior electronics can all weaken or block wireless signals.
To address this, we developed a standardized equipment package known as the Site Client. This system includes:
- A weather‑resistant Station (a dome‑shaped device) mounted outside the camper
- An AirCube located inside the camper, which powers the Station and provides internal WiFi coverage
The Station connects directly to a campground AP, while the AirCube distributes that connection as a private WiFi network inside the RV.
Why Outdoor Mounting Matters
Although some campers have had partial success placing the Station inside a window, we strongly recommend mounting it outdoors. This ensures the best possible performance for several reasons:
- Windows reduce signal strength — especially tinted, coated, or double‑pane RV windows
- RV walls and insulation block WiFi far more than most people expect
- Outdoor mounting aids in providing a clear line‑of‑sight to the nearest campground AP
- Weather‑rated hardware is designed for exterior use, ensuring durability and reliability
For the strongest, most stable connection, the Station should always be mounted outside the RV whenever possible. We have witnessed speed increases greater than double by locating the NanoBeam outside.
A station located inside an RV, experiencing a poor signal may function; however, the weak signal consumes increased airtime from the access point. This occurs because data may require multiple transmission attempts if the initial transmission fails to reach the station inside the RV. Given that airtime is a finite resource, when low-signal devices consume a significant portion of it, the performance of all devices connected to that access point is adversely affected, resulting in reduced speeds for all users.
Correct Mounting Orientation
Proper orientation of the Station is essential for optimal performance. Many Site Client domes include a built‑in bubble level to help with alignment. When installing the Station:
- The bubble should be centered within its range
- The center of the dome should face the nearest campground AP (exact precision is not required, but closer alignment improves performance)
Even if your dome does not include a bubble level, there are two reliable indicators of correct orientation:
- Ethernet cable position — The cable should exit from the bottom of the dome
- The “U” alignment — The large letter “U” on the face of the dome should be upright, with both vertical lines pointing upward
These simple checks help ensure that the Station is positioned correctly for the strongest possible signal.
